A Simple Economics Lesson - The Broken Window Parable

My frustration with liberals and statists is their lack of understanding of economics. For all their “compassion,” their ignoring how the system works will cause poverty for even larger segments of the population. The lack of knowledge is understandable though – economic education in America has been corrupted by Progressives. Here are a few links to some video resources that I think are fundamental to understanding economics.

The Broken Window Parable is written by Fredric Bastiat. The Law which Bastiat wrote in 1850 is one of the best short, non- fiction books (originally written as a pamphlet) Go read the book and in the meantime, check out this video based on the Broken Window

Illinois Loses Most Jobs in the Nation

From the Illinois Policy Institute.

In a trend that continues to worsen, more Illinoisans found themselves unemployed in the month of July.

Illinois lost more jobs during the month of July than any other state in the nation, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report. After losing 7,200 jobs in June, Illinois lost an additional 24,900 non-farm payroll jobs in July. The report also said Illinois’s unemployment rate climbed to 9.5 percent. This marks the third consecutive month of increases in the unemployment rate.

Illinois started to create jobs as the national economy began to recover. But just when Illinois’s economy seemed to be turning around, lawmakers passed record tax increases in January of this year. Since then, Illinois’s employment numbers have done nothing but decline.

Data released today by the bureau confirms this downward trajectory. When it comes to putting people back to work, Illinois is going backwards. Since January, Illinois has dropped 89,000 people from its employment rolls.

It’s too early to know conclusively the full impact of the tax hikes on the Illinois economy. Nevertheless, Illinois’s employment numbers serve as a good reminder that public policies have dramatic consequences for the daily lives of Illinoisans. A combination of high taxes, overspending and red tape do nothing but chase away job creators and leave too many citizens without jobs. Springfield needs to act now and reverse course.

Quinn considering making 66% tax hike permanent; sign the petition to say NO

Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady condemned Governor Pat Quinn’s comments that he wouldn’t rule out making all or part of the state’s temporary 66% income tax hike permanent. Brady also announced a citizens online petition drive against the idea.

“Businesses and taxpayers have already been looking at leaving Illinois,” Brady said. “The only thing worse than a temporary tax hike would be a permanent one. ”

Brady said, “The way to bring jobs back to Illinois is through lower taxes – not higher taxes. The Governor apparently hasn’t noticed that the states that creating the most jobs these days are the ones who are lowering taxes.”

Brady said he hopes citizens would sign the online petition to “show the Governor and the State Legislature that we’ve had enough of the broken promises and reckless fiscal policy that makes Illinois one of the worst states to start a business in.”
