Gov seeks 33% tax hike for education, billions in spending cuts

SPRINGFIELD -- Uncorking a risky election-year gambit, Gov. Quinn on Wednesday proposed a 33 percent increase in the state income tax to avoid "sacrificing the future of a generation of children."

A new poll of America’s 18-29 year-olds released yesterday by Harvard’s Institute of Politics gives the Republican Party serious hope for change in 2010.

 

Brady Leads Quinn: 47-37

Illinois Republicans finally have a gubernatorial candidate, and for now at least he holds a 10-point lead over incumbent Democratic Governor Pat Quinn.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state finds State Senator Bill Brady leading Quinn 47% to 37%. Six percent (6%) prefer some other candidate, and nine percent (9%) are undecided.

In another worrisome sign for Democrats, a greater number of young Republicans are prepared to go to the polls in the 2010 election, according to a new survey.

The enthusiasm of young Democratic voters is waning, according to the poll from the Harvard Institute of Politics.

And it could spell trouble for the party.

 

City Council stealth payroll criticized

A stealth payroll loaded with friends, relatives and political operatives of Chicago aldermen appears to violate a ban on political hiring and was not revealed to the federal court overseeing city hiring, the court-appointed monitor concluded Monday.

Noelle Brennan cited a series of "actual or potential abuses," including many highlighted by the Tribune in November when it documented the existence of the $1.3 million Finance Committee payroll.

 

Illinois House GOP unveils 'economic reform agenda'

As Gov. Pat Quinn prepares to release his proposed state budget next
week, Illinois House Republicans are offering their own agenda for economic
reform.

In cooperation with the Illinois Policy Institute, a libertarian think
tank, House Rs want a combination of procedural shifts and spending cuts
that they say would make government work better.

Massive Cuts Coming, Even With Tax Hike

Gov. Pat Quinn's plan to fill the biggest deficit in Illinois history includes cuts so severe that 17,000 teachers could lose their jobs, thousands of poor families would get less help with child care and fewer state troopers would patrol the roads, a top Quinn aide said Saturday.

Such cuts will be necessary even if lawmakers agree to the governor's call for an income tax increase, said Quinn budget director David Vaught.
